The Sadhana (spiritual practice) of Singing Bhajans
We should come close to God and merge with him. The great Siddhas, Alwars and Nayanmars and later, Mirabai, came close to God by forgetting themselves and singing songs of devotion to Him. They composed bhajans and other devotional songs and as they sang they became completely immersed in God. They felt the grace of God and some received the power of Shakti as they sang with such devotion. The Siddhas were in different spiritual states. They composed songs which revealed many truths. As they closed their eyes and sang, they knew what was happening in the present and what was going to happen in the future. They sang such miraculous kirtans composed with a raga and they sang so sweetly that if peope heard them singing they would get goosebumps!
We can compare the way people sang then and the way they sing now. We can think about the difference and remember that those people completely forgot themselves. They didn’t think about themselves as they sang. They believed that there was a wisdom and power beyond them. They believed in the grace of God. They sang with such devotion all the time that they received God’s grace.
There was no ego in them. They never thought that they were the only ones who could sing. That attitude should not be present in the mind. They didn’t laugh when they sang. They didn’t give importance to the raga. All their thoughts were directed towards God. They didn’t need any stringed musical instruments to play a harmony for them – they didn’t think about instruments. They just directed their thoughts towards God and immersed themselves in that, and the raga and instrumental music were composed by them naturally.
Many attained a high state when they sang those pure bhajans and kirtans. When those living a worldly life sang those bhajans and kirtans, their homes were purified. Any evil forces present in the house would disappear. When people heard those songs, the evil which resided in them was also removed.
When we sing bhajans in a place a Divine power will come and reside there without our knowledge. Many miracles can happen because of that power. It is a great gift to sing bhajans.
