Seva in Sri Premananda Ashram

Since its very beginning over 30 years ago in Matale, Sri Lanka, the Ashram of Swami Premananda has always been a place of charity and of giving service to the poor. At the young age of 17, when Swami Premananda became a monk and decided to dedicate his life to serving mankind, he began taking care of destitute children, organizing peace walks, feeding the poor and hungry and giving many other services.

Later, when Swami Premananda came to India in 1983 and founded the Sri Premananda Ashram near Trichy in Tamil Nadu, it also became a centre for many large-scale charitable works.

During the past 15 years one of the main aims of Sri Premananda Ashram has been to improve conditions, not only for the local children but also those of women, the elderly and the environment. Apart from projects for youngsters, such as our home for poor children and the school, the Ashram also runs a small dispensary, has started a reforestation project and has initiated the use of alternative energy sources through the use of solar pumps and windmills. Using these alternative energy sources for irrigation, the Ashram has been able to establish plantations of fruit trees and flowering plants. These projects also ensure many jobs for widows and poor women from the surrounding villages.
