GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING BHAJANS
1. The room or temple where bhajans are held should
be spotlessly clean.
2. It is good to burn oil lamps and incense in
the room where bhajans are to be held. This creates a pure and devotional
atmosphere.
3. It is better if everyone is seated for a few
minutes prior to the start of the bhajan.
4. Bhajan lead singers and instrumentalists should
sit in the front rows of the gathering.
5. During the bhajan it is good not to greet each
other or talk. Remember that devotional singing is also a spiritual
practice.
6. Musical instruments played during the bhajan
should be played at a normal sound level which does
not drown the voices of the lead singers.
7. Learn to clap in time. Clapping out of tune
spoils the songs.
8. Bhajans are usually sung in chorus led by one
singer and the group following the lead singer. Each bhajan line
is normally sung two times in the first speed and then one time
on the second speed. Of course, this may vary according to the composition
of the bhajan. At the end the first and maybe the second line is
sung slowly to end the song.
9. At the end of the bhajan session it is good
to sit or move away quietly so as not to disturb the elevated atmosphere
created by the devotional songs.
