Yoga, Yogi, Yogini, Yogeshwara

Means one who follows the teachings of Yoga. Yoga means oneness of Atman (the soul) and Brahman (the Absolute). It also therefore means Samadhi (perfect steadiness). This attribute is a most divine one as it is said that God Himself steadies His Self within His Self. High philosophy indeed that can only be truly known by one practising yoga! Once one comes under the guidance of a true spiritual master one becomes fit for one of the branches of Yoga. There are many types of Yoga. These are different spiritual paths that lead one towards the Truth. The ancient scripture, the Shiva Samhita, describes a yogi as one who knows that the entire universe it situated within the body. Essentially, he or she aspires for perfection by transcending the body and mind and reaching the state of inner, independent ecstasy by union with the Divine within. Yogic perfection is the ultimate purpose of the spiritual path. One who has such a name follows the teachings of yoga. 2,500 years ago, Adi Shankara stated that yoga is knowledge and that the Lord is called Yogi because we can access Him through Jnana Yoga itself (the yoga of knowledge).

Yogeshwara is the Lord of yoga. It is one of the names of Krishna and Lord Vishnu.

These words of the great Bhishma from the ancient epic the Mahabharata mean:
"Yoga, knowledge and renunciation of all other than the Self
The sciences and fine arts
The Vedic scriptures and all learning
All of this has arisen from Janardana (Lord Vishnu) Himself."
